CleanWhy deleting iCloud files doesn't free up space (and can delete them everywhere)
This is one of the most dangerous traps. Your Desktop can show 91 files with normal sizes and actually use 20 KB, because they're stored in iCloud and your Mac only keeps a placeholder.
How to tell if a file is on your Mac or only in iCloud
Don't touchIn Finder, cloud-only files show a cloud icon next to the name. If you delete one, you gain no space and it's also deleted from your iPhone, iPad and iCloud.com.
What to do instead
SafeIf you want space, right-click the file → Remove Download. It stays in iCloud but stops using your drive. To have macOS do it automatically, turn on Optimize Mac Storage in System Settings → your name → iCloud → iCloud Drive.
